A 35-year-old Indigenous man was found unresponsive in his cell at Long Bay Hospital on Tuesday. This is a medical facility in the Long Bay Correctional Complex.
The cause of death is unknown at this stage, and the coroner will hold an inquest in the near future.
“Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident. All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest,” a spokeswoman for Corrective Services NSW stated.
It comes just six weeks before a NSW Upper House inquiry is due to hand down its findings into the high level of First Nations people in custody and the oversight of deaths in the system.
