Law Council President's Award

Peter O’Brien Wins The 2024 President’s Award by Law Council Australia

At O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors, we are thrilled to share that our Principal Solicitor, Peter O’Brien, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 President’s Award by the Law Council of Australia. This honour is a testament to Peter’s tireless commitment to justice and his profound impact on the legal profession and society at large.

The President of the Law Council of Australia, Greg McIntyre, acknowledged Peter O’Brien, particularly his unwavering dedication, stating:

“The resume of NSW Solicitor, Mr. Peter O’Brien, shows a commitment to serving the community and ensuring those in need, but with the least facility to access justice, have somewhere to turn. His efforts have achieved just outcomes for many vulnerable clients.”

Peter O’Brien: A Career Dedicated to Justice

Peter O’Brien’s career is a shining example of advocacy in action. Since being admitted as a solicitor in 1998, Peter has worked tirelessly to protect the rights of the most disadvantaged, including his time with the Children’s Legal Service of NSW, the Katherine Regional Aboriginal Legal Aid Service, and as a senior criminal solicitor with NSW Legal Aid.

In one of his most remarkable cases, Peter’s advocacy for a young First Nations client led to his own wrongful imprisonment for contempt—a decision later deemed unlawful. This case exemplifies his courage to challenge systemic injustices and stand up for what is right.

Peter O'Brien

A Leader in the Legal Profession

Peter’s influence extends far beyond the courtroom. He co-founded the University of Technology Sydney’s Community Law and Legal Research Centre and co-authored the authoritative text Intentional Torts Litigation in Australia. As a lecturer and regular presenter at professional development events, Peter has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of Australian law.

Peter O’Brien has also made significant contributions to Royal Commissions, including the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and represented high-profile clients such as Dylan Voller, exposing abuse at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in the Northern Territory.

A Deserved Recognition for Peter O’Brien

This award recognizes not only Peter’s legal expertise but also his compassion, courage, and commitment to justice. His fearless advocacy and dedication have had a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals and the broader community.

At O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors, we are incredibly proud of Peter and the legacy he continues to build. His work inspires us to pursue justice with the same passion and determination.

Congratulations, Peter, on this well-deserved recognition. We are honoured to stand beside you as you continue to make a difference in the legal world.
