During negotiations, the charge of robbery was withdrawn by the police. Maya pleaded guilty to the remaining charges.

After submissions were made, the Magistrate determined that the appropriate course of action was a youth justice conference. In Australia, youth justice conferences are a diversionary measure that often do not result in a conviction being recorded.
What secured this outcome was the way the matter was framed for the court.
Rather than let the events of that night speak alone, we put Maya’s circumstances at the centre of our submissions: a young person raised in the foster system and grappling with substance dependence from an early age, whose conduct reflected that background rather than a settled pattern of behaviour.
Our criminal lawyers argued that recording a conviction would attach lasting consequences to a child still capable of change. We argued that a youth justice conference, with its focus on accountability, repair, and genuine rehabilitation, was the course that best served both Maya and the community. The Magistrate agreed.
Positive Outcome: Charges Dismissed
Following completion of the youth justice conference, the Magistrate dismissed Maya’s charges without conviction.

In Maya’s case, the youth justice conference provided an opportunity for rehabilitation and a second chance, resulting in the criminal charges against our client being dismissed.
