O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors: Year in Review

O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors has had a remarkable year in 2017. We are proud of the wide range of successes that we’ve had this year that span from our involvement in Royal Commissions to our successful outcomes for clients in both criminal and civil cases and our pro bono work.

A year filled with Royal Commissions

2017 marked the conclusion of the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors has been heavily involved in both inquiries over the past few years.

We represented key clients including Dylan Voller in the NT Royal Commission.  Peter O’Brien was interviewed by Channel 9’s 60 Minutes program about Dylan Voller where he spoke about Dylan’s courage and the inadequacies of youth detention centres.

Our solicitors also represented survivors of sexual abuse who provided crucial evidence in the Child Abuse Royal Commission. We acted for these clients in initiating civil proceedings against the institutions that failed them and were able to receive positive judgments and settlements in their favour.

Heading into the new year, O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors will be involved in the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry that is expected to start early 2018. Contact us if you require representation in this inquiry.

With our extensive experience in Royal Commissions we can confidently say that O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors is Australia’s leading law firm in this area.

Peter O'Brien was a lawyer appearing at Royal CommissionsCriminal Trial Advocacy

Whilst O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors has done a lot of work with commissions this year we have maintained our reputation as expert trial advocates. Our criminal solicitors have represented many high profile clients and dealt with complex criminal cases. This has included the representation of clients in terrorist charges in Commonwealth prosecutions and pending appeals.

Our solicitors have achieved successful outcomes for our clients in Local Courts and District Courts around NSW as well as acquittals for clients in the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal. We have assisted many clients with successful bail applications enabling them to spend their Christmas with their loved ones. These ongoing successes provide proof of our commitment to clients and our experience across all criminal matters.

Legal Aid Lawyers

O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors has had another year assisting clients who have been granted legal aid funding. In August this year Peter O’Brien presented talks at the Juvenile Justice Legal Aid NSW Crime Conference. He also published a paper discussing juvenile justice and his thoughts on the Northern Territory Royal Commission.

Pro Bono Work

O’Brien Criminal and Civil Solicitors has expanded our pro bono work this year. The firm has assisted clients who were unable to afford legal representation but had been refused a grant of legal aid. We will continue our pro bono practice heading into next year with several cases already in the motion.
